9/25 Seminar: Dr. Eric Erslev
Howdy!
Tomorrow (9/25) we will be having a seminar by Dr. Eric Erslev from 12-1 in Halbouty 327:
Natural Fractures in the Niobrara Resource Play of the Rocky Mountains
Natural fractures commonly provide critical fluid conduits for the tight reservoirs that characterize resource plays (e.g., shale gas and oil). Natural fracture orientations, intensity, timing and mechanisms are crucial to planning horizontal well sites and horizontal leg geometries as the objective is to tap as many oil- and/or gas-bearing fractures as possible while avoiding water conduits. This presentations will examine natural fractures and their mechanisms in the Rocky Mountains region, with a special emphasis on the Cretaceous Niobrara Formation of the eastern Rockies, which is the target of a major shale oil play. A wide range of fracture mechanisms will be illustrated and discussed, providing a tool box for intelligent fracture studies in other orogens as well.
Eric Erslev is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Wyoming. He received his BA from Wesleyan University in 1976 and his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1981. Eric also taught at Lafayette College (1981-83) and Colorado State University (1981-2008). He is known for his field-based classes, structural modeling and RMAG/AAPG/GSA field trips in the Rockies, receiving the 2008 RMAG Outstanding Scientist Award in 2008 and an AAPG Distinguished Educator Award in 2010. Eric is a structural geologist specializing in field-based investigations of basement-involved foreland deformation, commonly in collaboration with the petroleum industry. He and his students have published on Rocky Mountain Precambrian petrogenesis, Laramide tectonics, fault-related-folding (trishear) and fracture mechanisms. He is the lead investigator for the Bighorn Project and also does structural geology consulting for oil companies.
9/22 Tailgate

The second tailgate of the new season is tomorrow September 22nd @ 1:00 pm.

- Companies enjoy cost-efficient and timely recruiting from a diverse and talented student population.
Activities at the two-day Student Expo include:
- Open poster sessions on geology and geophysics, followed by poster awards,
- Multiple field-trip and short-course options,
- Company sponsored Ice Breaker, and
- A potentially full day of poster presentations and interviews!
Note: Students are requested to submit their resumes and poster abstracts in advance of the meeting (deadline: 5 September 2012). This allows companies to identify candidates with the required skill sets!
Students who graduated within the last two years may still participate in this event.
